Hi, I'm Jared – I tell stories with data and code
My name is Jared Whalen and I am a data visual journalist, designer and web developer. I work with a lot of different tools and technologies, but often find myself using a combination of:
- R + Tidyverse
- JavaScript (ES6+)
- Svelte
- Node.js
- D3.js
- Illustrator
- QGIS
- Bash
Currently, I am a journalist engineer at Polygraph/The Pudding. Previously, I worked in data & graphics reporter/developer roles at Axios, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Delaware Online.
In 2015, I graduated from Temple Univesity with a B.A. in Journalism, with an emphasis in photography and multimedia storytelling. In 2022, I completed Temple's graduate certificate program in geospatial data science.
I was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve from 2012 to 2024. In 2015, I earned a commission through Temple's ROTC program and served as a company commander, brigade logistics manager, executive officer and platoon leader.
Outside of work, I spend a lot of time playing D&D, going to concerts, and trying to stay active. I play bass in a hardcore punk band called Brainwashed. My wife and I live in Philadelphia with our two rescue dogs, Gavin and Pedro.
